After a quick but thorough greeting to Ben, Watson settled down where the late-morning sun poured through the front windows. He’d barely more than settled before he popped back up and trotted into the mystery room, where he did a similar circular dance on top of his ottoman. That position lasted a touch longer before he hopped up again with a grunt and shuffled into the main room to his sunbeam. He turned clockwise three times, counterclockwise once, as if he’d gone too far, then settled down. One of his ears twitched, his nub of a tail wagged then stopped, and finally he gave a long, contented sigh that indicated sleep was finally about to arrive.

Having watched the entire production, Ben and I exchanged glances. Though he chuckled, he kept his voice low, clearly not wanting to disturb our chubby little mascot. “Someone seems a little bit ungrounded today. Too many treats or not enough?”

“Are there ever enough?” On that note, I decided it was high time for another dirty chai but lingered with Ben for another second. “He’s not the only one ungrounded. You know, sometimes I fancy myself pretty decent at putting together the pieces of a mystery, but this one has me spinning more than Watson just did. I quite literally have no idea what to do next.”

“Maybe you don’t need to do anything next.” I’d started to head up to the bakery, but Ben spoke, holding me in place. “I mean, there’s not a murder. There’s no rush, right? You don’t really think he was kidnapped, do you?”

“I…” After considering for a moment, I nodded. “You’re right. I don’t really think he was kidnapped, and you’re also right about the urgency. I was actually thinking that last night, but somehow that got washed away in the bustle of the morning.” I smiled, my frequent affection for him blossoming once more. “You’re pretty smart, Ben Pacheco, thanks! I think for the rest of the day I’ll merely be a bookseller.”

His dark gaze twinkled. “And if I know you, probably one who hopes for no customers so she can curl up and read a book by the fire.”

“See?” I chuckled. “You’re pretty on your toes putting together mystery pieces as well.”
